Light and Workshops
Light
Light is a powerful symbol across virtually all cultures. In fact in the Bible, it’s God’s first words: “Let there be light!”
Light, in all of its manifestations, is the underlying theme for both 6 Million Lights and its two sponsoring nonprofits:
Nurturing one’s light.
Sharing one’s light.
Putting more light into the world.
But what exactly does that mean?
We get it. It sounds soft and gauzy. Too undefined.
But we try to avoid constraining definitions. Because we all have a sense of what it means to put more light into the world. And we each need to define it for ourselves. The range of definitions that have arisen from our participants has been inspiring and remarkable. For many of our participants, the personal meaning of light evolves and changes; it also varies depending upon one’s perspective.
Internally directed: Reflection. Self-compassion. Illuminating one’s inner soul. Identifying and pursuing one’s passion. Laser-like focus on changing a habit or way of thinking. Renewal of hope. Inspiration. Gratitude work.
Outwardly directed: Patience. Kindness. Compassion for others. Tolerance. Passion for positive change. Generosity. Inspiring others. Combating hate. Being an up stander. Random acts of kindness. Honest, heartfelt two-way conversations. Volunteering. Openess. Civic action. Kind speech. Making sure there’s “light in the door” for future generations. Humbly sharing one’s hard-earned wisdom. Love.
How will you put more light into the world?
Making Meaning
You can think of the lamp as the tangible physical “product” of the workshop experience (the hardware), but equally important is the “process,” which is how we surround the lamp with layers of meaning, healing, connection and inspiration. Yes, the lamps are beautiful, sometimes distractingly so, but the “software” of the workshop—the process—is even more important.
Workshops and Educational Experiences
We offer a range of workshop and educational experiences,
but they generally fall into two categories:
Live in-person, Zoom, and hybrid facilitated workshops
Online, on demand asynchronous workshops and educational experiences—at home as individuals or in small groups
Whether online or in person, our workshops and educational offerings allow time for reflection, sharing of experiences and wisdom, and ceremony.
The weakness of many workshops and educational experiences is that they can be wonderfully magical and transformative while participants are ensconced in the “bubble” of the experience, but once out of the bubble, the glow of the experience fades quickly. In contrast, we offer a “tail” in the form of a beautiful lamp which serves as a luminous reminder of the discoveries made, meanings found, and intentions set. Long after specific memories fade, the lamp remains, and its embedded meanings continue to transform and grow.
