FAQs

We love questions! Here are some we’re often asked.

  • The 6 Million Lights Campaign seeks to honor the memory of the 6 million Jewish victims of the Holocaust, murdered solely on the basis of their religion, identity or ethnic background.

  • There were about 5 million other victims of the Holocaust, murdered because of their political beliefs, sexual orientation, or because of various disabilities.  They also deserve to have their memory honored. So, after 6 Million the next goal is 11 Million.

  • It’s true that the genesis of the 6 Million Lights Campaign is the tragic loss of innocent lives in the unspeakable cruelty and horror of the Holocaust.  One way to honor their memory is to make “Never Again” a reality, but we should also try to go beyond that, doing our best to repair this broken world through positive actions.  Even if there was no Holocaust, this would be a worthy endeavor.  So we’d describe the 6 Million Lights Campaign as a Holocaust-adjacent project rather than a Holocaust-centric project.

  • Well, the 6 Million Lights Campaign is a campaign, meaning it’s strategic, focused, disciplined, and collaborative.  So we think we’ll achieve our goal.  But if we fall short, we can always extend the campaign over a longer duration.  But let’s not define ourselves solely by the numbers - remember, it’s about one light, one individual at a time, so even if we fall short of the goal this campaign can still have significant impact.

  • Well, there were 5 million additional victims of the Holocaust…so let’s work next toward 11 Million Lights, expanding the awareness and increasing our impact.

And if  you achieve the goal of 11 Million Lights?

    Hmmmm….

  • Each of our participants goes into the 6 Million Lights Campaign registry and database, but names and personal information are kept private.  Each of our  lamps or lamp kits is numbered and tracked sequentially but this is an internal number we use to track the number of lamps. NOTE: The actual number assigned to your lamps is a random non-repeating number between 1 and 6 million.

  • Light is one of the most powerful symbols and themes in human civilization. “Let there be light!” are the first words God speaks in the Bible, and no matter what one’s religion or spiritual beliefs, that’s worthy of further reflection. But regardless of one’s spiritual orientation, we all know what it means to “put more light” into the world.  And we all would agree that light is meant to be shared.

  • What better and more beautiful way to remind ourselves of the intention to put more light into the world?

  • We offer a range of initiatives, many of which can be accessed online, and some of which are in-person workshops.  You can make yourself a lamp with one of our easy-to-build lamp kits or you can order a pre-manufactured lamp, and then you can join the roster of 6 Million LIghts participants through one of our easy-to-access online educational programs or in-person workshops.  It need not be a huge investment in time to be a meaningful--and ultimately transformative--experience.

  • The 6 Million Lights Campaign is a joint project of two nonprofits, The Illumignossi Project, a secular nonprofit and OrLanu, a Jewish nonprofit.  Both organizations have been putting more light into the world through innovative light-making workshops with a range of initiatives from cradle to grave.

  • Thank you!  Here are some options:  1) We hope you’ll be a participant in the 6 Million Lights Campaign!  2) We’re looking for talented, passionate people to join our management and staff team.  3) We’re looking for talented, passionate people with appropriate skill sets to join the Advisory Board of 6 Million Lights or the Board of Directors of the two sponsoring organizations - The Illumignossi Project and OrLanu.  4)  We’re looking for philanthropic investors who will help fund our needs through capital investments that can be paid back.  5)  We don’t turn down grants or donations!  6)  We’re looking for volunteers, collaborators, media-influencers.  7) Ideas, suggestions and feedback are also welcome!

  • Absolutely!  We are the opposite of a silo-oriented nonprofit.  We make great partners if you are aligned with our mission of putting more light into the world.  And depending upon the degree of collaboration, we are willing to split proceeds 50/50?

  • We’re collaborative, we have a wide range of inclusive initiatives and we can be sustainably funded through the sale of our lamps and lamp kits.

  • We don’t want to see anybody NOT participate in the 6 Million Lights Campaign because of a lack of funds.  We offer free lamp kits to students from middle school through college.  We also offer scholarships to non-students who couldn’t otherwise afford the cost of our lamp kits or lamps.  But by the way, these lamps and lamp kits are quite affordable and the online courses are absolutely free!
